What is Occupation?

Occupation refers to groups of activities and tasks of everyday life, named, organised and given meaning by individuals and a culture. Occupation is everything people do to occupy themselves, including looking after themselves (self-care), enjoying life (leisure) and contributing to the social and economical fabric of their communities (productivity) (CAOT, 1997a p.34).

At Positive Occupational Therapy Sevices, occupation is entrenched in our mission, values and beliefs. About Occupation we believe:

Occupation gives meaning to life and has theraputic potential

That humans are occupational beings in the sense that each person is unique, has intrinsic dignity and worth

That every person has the right to make choices about life, and has the right to self-determination.

As Occupational Therapists we acknowledge all aspects of a persons environment, including cultural, instituational, physical and social components.

That well-being extends beyond health to quality of life and is strongly influenced by having choice and control in everyday occupations.

At positive Occupational Therapy Services, people who access our service are the experts with regards  their own occupations, but must be active partners throughout the occupational therapy process.
